Diode Ensures Privacy With the Intersection of DePIN and RWA

In 2024 digital privacy is under threat more than ever thanks to data breaches, internet censorship and digital surveillance.

Virtual Private Networks (VPN) and onion browsers are popular. But traditional VPNs can monitor users’ networks, and cannot prevent cookie tracking, viruses, malware, DDoS attacks or phishing scams.

File sharing via cloud storage is vulnerable to hackers and malicious actors. And sensitive communications between teams are often stored on application servers owned by a third-party.

That’s where Diode comes in.

Diode provides secure and private communications through their Zero Trust Network (ZTN) solution built on Moonbeam. The decentralized architecture means users can share sensitive files, information and messages directly – neither Diode, nor anyone else, has access to them.

“Diode makes end to end encryption globally available to every person, builder, and project. It ensures that those responsible for people, assets, or IP can rest assured that the connections between them are private and not compromised.” – Hans Rempel, Diode Co-Founder

Secure Communications Thanks to a Revolutionary Zero Trust Network

Today, internet users’ data gets routed through a myriad of centralized services often managed by entities that have the power to monitor, censor, restrict and deplatform at any moment, in just a few clicks.

Diode’s ZTN solution fuses RWA with DePIN to fix these problems and provide secure, trustless and decentralized infrastructure for individuals and institutions to communicate.

Not only is the platform designed to keep conversations private, data secure, and still allow information to flow freely – especially in regions that restrict internet access - but participants are rewarded for providing bandwidth and handling traffic.

Whether preserving confidential discussions between lawyers and their clients, or keeping sensitive business data private and secure, traditional infrastructure falls short, with data breaches, information leaks and compromised users being commonplace.

“Privacy is a pre-requisite for innovation, and an expectation of commercial enterprise. Diode's use of blockchain-anchored data, and relationship-bootstrapped encryption enables sovereign, community-centric environments for people to stay connected and get things done.” – Hans Rempel, Diode Co-Founder

Diode’s Zero Trust Network is a Game Changer for Internet Privacy

Diode’s ZTN is a world-first for secure communication and privacy-led collaboration. In a time when hacks happen frequently and digital surveillance is common, online security is paramount for people and companies alike.

Here is a selection of real world use cases Diode solves for:

  • End-to-End Encrypted Messaging: Diode enables secure chat across organizations with no cloud storage.
  • Direct File Sharing: Diode allows file transfers without relying on vulnerable cloud services through secure tunnels between you and your team members.
  • Zero Trust Network (ZTN) Access: Diode provides safer-than-VPN access to applications, corporate resources, and Internet regions.
  • Decentralized Infrastructure: Diode leverages Moonbeam’s blockchain technology to eliminate third-party access to user data.

Diode solves for these use cases through four core products:

  1. Diode App – An app similar to Slack or Discord that is more secure than Signal, where teams can chat, share files and enjoy secure web access.
  2. Diode CLI – This headless interface tool enables edge device connectivity with zero leakage and can securely connect assets anywhere in the world.
  3. Diode Vault – An RWA solution that ensures 100% availability of team chats, files and assets, with backup support, time zone-bridging and network exit nodes.
  4. Diode Network – The only ZTN anchored in blockchain technology, with global nodes providing secure communication infrastructure.

Secure Internet Privacy and Decentralized Nodes That Reward the Community

Diode’s decentralized node network tokenizes bandwidth. Users can download a Network NodeGo to page [object Object] and earn points for handling traffic.

Now running 60 nodes, Diode has set an ambitious goal of growing to 1,500 nodes by March 2025. This expansion is part of their mission to create a robust, global and rewarding privacy network.

Diode incentivizes community participation. Users can earn tokens by actively contributing to the network’s ongoing health and performance. And setting up a node takes less than five minutes.

Connected nodes then show up in Diode’s Network mapGo to page [object Object]. And community engagement has continued to climb for Diode since launch:

  • User Growth: Over 2,000 new users since June.
  • Node Network: Currently operating 60 nodes, with a goal to reach 1,500 nodes by March 2025.
  • Transaction Volume: Over 100,000 on-chain transactions (new users, new collaboration zones, and permission changes), demonstrating active usage.
  • Global Reach: Successfully providing secure communication in regions with internet restrictions such as North Korea and China.

Privacy and Internet Freedom Provided by Diode

Diode delivers a comprehensive, privacy-first collaboration platform with military-grade security. Thanks to Diode’s Zero Trust Network, users get VPN-like access with true privacy controls, flexible exit points, and no centralized oversight.

How Does Diode Achieve Zero Trust Communications?

Most VPNs require computers to connect to the VPN server in the country they want to exit in. But not with Diode’s ZTN.

After signing in, Diode creates a VPN tunnel to the website being visited, without disconnecting the computer from its regular internet access. Only the specific website and browser session launched from Diode uses the VPN tunnel to access the destination website. This means users can browse the web without exposing personal and sensitive information to server environments that might retain it indefinitely.

Diode’s unique approach combining DePIN and RWA means anyone can run a Diode node and help expand the network’s reach.

Nodes connect devices that want to communicate with each other. These nodes and their operators are rewarded for the secure bandwidth they provide to devices. One of the key advantages of the Diode network is its availability from anywhere in the world. In this respect, nodes perform two core functions:

  • Keeps regional communications in the region.
  • Opens up communication routes to devices in the rest of the world.

Diode’s incentivized node operation encourages users to establish new nodes in underserved regions. Users hosting their own node may integrate with enterprise tools, isolate traffic and reduce costs - the more bandwidth they provide, the higer their rewards.

Diode’s Secure Communication Platform Built on Moonbeam

Both Diode and Moonbeam believe that access to free, private communications is a fundamental human right. Yet in many regions across the world, messaging apps and internet access is restricted or banned.

Diode’s innovative product suite required an equally innovative blockchain to build on. With security being paramount to Diode’s offering, Moonbeam’s origins as a parachain let it harnesses Polkadot's shared security – making it the perfect infrastructure for Diode to create its ZTN solution.

Specifically, it was Moonbeam’s TX Call Permit Go to page [object Object]allows a nominated wallet to pay fees on behalf of other wallets, meaning the barrier to entry is considerably lowered.

Diode's journey on Moonbeam showcases the power of combining DePIN and RWA solutions with a robust, scalable blockchain.

  • EVM Compatibility: Diode seamlessly deployed their Ethereum-based smart contracts on Moonbeam, saving time and resources.
  • Interoperability: Connection to the Polkadot ecosystem opens up possibilities for cross-chain functionality and broader reach.
  • Scalability: Moonbeam's high transaction throughput with Asynchronous Backing ensures Diode can handle growing user demands.
  • Thriving DePIN Ecosystem: Diode joins a community of innovative projects, fostering collaboration and shared growth.

The use of Moonbeam’s blockchain technology provides a much-needed solution that eliminates the single point of failure risk with the trust broker inherent in most other ZTN and VPN products.

“Building Diode on Moonbeam has allowed us to accelerate our roadmap for features, regional coverage, and market awareness. DePIN projects like ours need a scalable and hands-on partner like Moonbeam.” – Hans Rempel, Diode Co-Founder
